This one-bedder is selling for $1.55m
This pint-sized home might only have one bedroom and one bathroom, but it packs a punch when it comes to presence.
Not to mention the fact that it shares a neighbourhood with some of Palm Beach’s most exclusive and expensive homes.
House III, as it is known, is located at 25 Cynthea Rd, and is made up of an open living and dining space on the ground floor and a small upper floor bedroom. The whole home is a modest 85sq m.
An additional 81sq m of external deck and terrace areas provide extra space and add to the indoor-outdoor theme.
The edgy design, by Gordon + Valich Architects and Belinda Koopman, is owned by photographer Greg Barrett, who bought the 696sq m site in 1990. His brief to the architects was simple.
“I said two words — surprise me,” he said. “I don’t see the sense in having an architect and telling them what to do.”
The home was finished in 1998, and was used by Mr Barrett and his family as a holiday home and, more recently it has been used for a permanent home.
In fact the last tenant was a single mum who lived there quite happily with her two children, he said.
“It’s not a huge house, but it’s got this big space feel about it,” Mr Barrett said.
The house has picked up plenty of fans along the way, as well as the Australian Institute of Architects Merit Award for Housing in 1999.
Mr Barrett has reluctantly decided to sell the property he has owned for more than 25 years, as he and his family are currently living in Melbourne for work. He hopes one day to return to the Palm Beach area.
“It’s only for a while, we’ll be back,” he said.
There is one thing about this home that isn’t pocket-sized — the price tag of $1.55 million.
The home is for sale through Modern House Estate Agents, with inspection by private appointment. Phone 1300 814 768 for more details.
